Transcendence Gallery joins Water Street Market
Transcendence Gallery is re-launching at Water Street Market, Saturday Oct 17th. We are focusing on new work from the remote islands of the Mentawai. A beautiful paradise scattered along the edge of Sumatra- where man still lives in relative isolation. Chris Rainier travelled to Mentawai to document the tribes - completing his fifteen year photographic project documenting traditional tribal tattooing around the globe. The set of images being exhibited at the Transcendence Gallery at Water Street are a combination of photographs taken over a two week expedition for a Smithsonian TV documentary on Rainier's photography to be released in 2010. Chris Rainier is a National Geographic Society Fellow and photographer who has spent his life documenting disappearing traditional cultures around the globe. Rainier was the noted photographer Ansel Adams last photographic Assistant from 1980 to 1985...Transcendence Gallery will rotate old and new work from the far reaches of the globe featuring culture, sustainability and the environment.
